Unique Slate from an Historic Quarry

The Monson Black Slate Mines produced the finest black slate in the United States from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s with several dozen quarries employing thousands of miners. Mine shafts litter the town, and tunnels extend hundreds of feet deep. One tunnel even goes under Lake Hebron. The uniquely strong black slate mined here produced electrical panels for GE, blackboard slate for schools and businnesses, black shingle roofing, and most notable the headstone for former U.S. President, John F.
